Those were the days - An appreciation of "All in the Family," by Edward Copeland

Edward Copeland on Film...and more: Those were the days:

'The program you are about to see is All in the Family. It attempts to throw a humorous spotlight on our frailties, prejudices and concerns. By making them a source of laughter, we hope to show — in a mature fashion — just how absurd they are.'
I never knew, or had forgotten, CBS felt it had to prepare viewers for what they were about to experience when "All in the Family" aired for the first time. A child of the 70s, the show is burned into my TV consciousness, and I'm the better for it.

I wonder what kids growing up today have for a TV analog of their comically-out-of-touch-product-of-his-times-but-still-wonderful granddad? Archie Bunker was very nearly a clone of my maternal grandfather. Is Ed O'Neill that guy for the youth of today?
