Important debate tonight. Marshall's campaign hasn't been making much noise and Burr seems to be maintaining an edge in the polling. (The Libertarian candidate doesn't appear to be much of a factor.) If you've been reading, you know I've got nothing good to say about Burr; he's a disgrace. I believe it's going to be important for Marshall to really get after him on issues that show how radical and contrary to the interests of NC voters Burr and the Republican party are. The only people she can alienate are the ones who weren't going to vote for her anyways; and, progressives need to be energized to get out and vote.

Young people who are passionate about gay rights, for example, need to hear their Democratic candidate call out the Right for their homophobic bigotry. Equality, whether it be with regard to marriage or military service, is an issue of basic fairness that costs nothing, absolutely nothing, and gives people a sense of purpose. Those who want to continue to allow prejudice against gays are clearly on the wrong side of history and only make themselves look like the frightened bigots they are the more they have to defend their position. Sure, those who are proud of the fact they are morally retarded will band together, but that number is getting smaller -- the fact they are getting louder is evidence of their desperation. They know they're losing, just as they did when it came to civil rights and women's suffrage before that.
