The Moon Is A Sticky Wicket

Found this malingering in google docs; my (unacknowledged) submission to a "sudden story" contest last year.
Kiran held Seamus's Sandeep card the way a boy (well, a certain kind of boy) a century earlier would've handled an Albert Pujols rookie card. That is to say, with exquisite gentleness. Fingertips barely touching the edges. Microcircuitry and power cell safely pressed into non-corrosive alloy with a diamond coated vidlens, the card was as indifferent to the oils from Kiran's skin as the hull of their school's transport to solar radiation. Kiran watched the 3-D highlights of Sandeep's heroic performance versus the hated Australian team in the 2122 World Limited Overs Championship and marvelled. He waggled his fingers over the images to run comparisons of Sandeep's Championship play stats against the numbers of other star players and smiled cheekily.

"How anybody could argue Johanssen is close to the caliber of player Sandeep is ... it's beyond me!" With this stated, Kiran stared defiantly at his friend, who clearly should not even own such a fine card as this while believing something so patently idiotic.

Seamus snatched the card back. "I'm not saying Johanssen is better than Sandeep in Championship play. If you look at test play over the years and the consistency of Johannsen's statistics while playing for a bhosdika South African squad that never advances ..."

But Kiran would have none of this. He activated his vid player with external visuals on so Seamus would know he'd been tuned out then turned to watch the transport dock. His view of Luna's surface was mostly obscured by the Hab station and the projected music video but the Solar Array where his parents worked was clearly visible on the horizon.Behind the stumps 2

Kiran and Seamus shuffled with their schoolmates toward the hatch as the transport's mag plates engaged. They'd race back to their respective decks to start their homework (create a documentary at least 30 minutes in length explaining how the geo-engineering efforts of the 2050s restored the Gulf Stream but accelerated the desertification of the Amazonian region) so their parents would allow them to watch Sandeep and Johanssen battle on the pitch at Armstrong Stadium that evening.
