Big East Homer

A Historical Context To the BIG EAST's Storybook NCAA Championship Run - BIG EAST Conference Athletics: The Big East already has three Elite Eight teams, after tonight it could be five. 3 is the record (held by several conferences). You have to like Louisville's chances (line is -8.5). Syracuse must be considered a long shot ... hmmm, looks like they're actually +1 or even depending on the line. Nice.

The 411?

Fourth Doctor rumored to be appearing with the Eleventh: Daily Express | Will Tom return? I'd love to see it. Tom's previously expressed an interest in the playing the Master, but I don't think that will fly. It'd have to be something like a splintered timeline Doctor -- there are any number of ways it could be sci-fied up, really. In any event, it would be awesome.

Somebody Set Up Him the Bomb.

BBC NEWS | Asia-Pacific | Man survived both atomic bombings: Upon certifying his experience, Tokyo Health and Human Services officials invited to Mr. Yamaguchi to, "just stay in Nagasaki. No need to come to Tokyo."

Hapax Legomenon

What is your Hapax legomenon? Well, don't tell me, because then it wouldn't be anymore. I think I'll say it just this once so the definition of the thing and the thing will be the same thing. That's handy. (Saw this at Dinosaur Comics which doesn't seem to have a permalink until the next comic is up.)

Manny Tries Cricket

Dodgers star Ramirez gives cricket a try in Gilbert
OK, I recognize there's something a little odd about blogging Manny Ramirez while the NCAA Tournament is going on. When it's blogging about Manny Ramirez trying out cricket, it borders on perverse. But, hey, we're all watching basketball ... it's this other stuff somebody's got to keep an eye on.

So, It Would Be Cheney's Voice?

Coming to a Remainder Bin Near You!
"I'm going to put people in my place, so when the history of this administration is written at least there's an authoritarian voice saying exactly what happened." —former president George W. Bush, in Calgary yesterday, discussing the book he plans to write. [AP via Google]

UNC? Nah. If not UConn, and probably not, then another Big East school. Louisville or Pitt.

Dino Mites

Dino Mites: A Diminutive Dinosaur in North America and a Rare Mass Death of Young Relatives in China: Scientific American - They headlined it for me. Although, I would've gone with the more dramatic "Dino-Mite!!" Double exclamation marks make is sound like J.J. Walker.

I Am ... Straight Edge

I Am ... Straight Edge -- Courant.com
I must be getting old. I wouldn't have thought it was possible to say you played in a band and lived "Straight Edge" without referencing Minor Threat. But, you can. And I've never heard of Parkway Drive. Life goes on without me.

Seeding

UConn Draws No. 1 Seed In The West -- Courant.com - Louisville and Pitt are also #1 seeds. Amazing. But, I think the committee got it right. I've been lowballing my expectations for the Huskies but I'm starting to waver and think this really could be another great year for them. It's not that I think they're looking better -- still not as good as the 1999 and 2004 teams -- but nobody else looks like they're head and shoulders above everyone else either. I think Memphis and UConn could've gone 1-2 without it being that big of a deal. I haven't looked at the full bracket yet, so I could be looking to revise this post shortly, but I suddenly see a future beyond the Sweet Sixteen for this year's edition.

We Have a Blank Spot in Our Vision

McKinsey: What Matters: Time to end the multigenerational Ponzi scheme by Kim Stanley Robinson:
"Does the word postcapitalism look odd to you? It should, because you hardly ever see it. We have a blank spot in our vision of the future. Perhaps we think that history has somehow gone away. In fact, history is with us now more than ever, because we are at a crux in the human story. Choosing not to study a successor system to capitalism is an example of another kind of denial, an ostrich failure on the part of the field of economics and of business schools, I think, but it’s really all of us together, a social aporia or fear. We have persistently ignored and devalued the future—as if our actions are not creating that future for our children, as if things never change. But everything evolves. With a catastrophe bearing down on us, we need to evolve at nearly revolutionary speed. So some study of what could improve and replace our society’s current structure and systems is in order. If we don’t take such steps, the consequences will be intolerable. On the other hand, successfully dealing with this situation could lead to a sustainable civilization that would be truly exciting in its human potential."
